Enhancing Pantry Operations with UX

In this capstone project, I collaborated with a cross-functional team to redesign critical systems at a community food pantry, aiming to streamline inventory management and enhance volunteer task coordination. This project was grounded in purpose-driven design, reflecting my commitment to solving real-world challenges through human-centered UX.

We began by conducting contextual inquiry, volunteer surveys, and stakeholder interviews to uncover key operational bottlenecks. Insights revealed issues like inconsistent labeling, disorganized item placement, and overdependence on certain staff, which hindered task independence and efficiency. Using affinity mapping, we synthesized user needs and pain points into clear problem areas.

Through multiple design sprints, we crafted a unified inventory and volunteer task management system. I led efforts in user flow development, wireframing, and prototyping, prioritizing clarity, accessibility, and autonomy. Our design replaced confusing spreadsheets with interactive dashboards, structured categorization, and personalized task views.

We evaluated the design through a mixed-method approach, including a cognitive walkthrough and think-aloud usability testing with real warehouse staff. The results were compelling:
🔹 70% faster item retrieval
🔹 53% improvement in task completion efficiency
🔹 Higher volunteer satisfaction and reduced onboarding time

This solution empowers pantry staff and volunteers alike by making essential tasks intuitive and transparent. It’s not just a design, it's a system that scales with need, improves operations, and respects the dignity of those serving and being served.

This project demonstrates my end-to-end UX capabilities: from research and systems thinking to testing and final delivery. It was a privilege to contribute to a design that brings structure, autonomy, and clarity to a vital community resource.
